WHAT DIFFERENCE DOES IT MAKE?

A friend of my friend told him, and then he told me, that all my other friends have wanted to know this trivia for a very long time. I think I have that right. Nevertheless, read on friends, because I have it here for you…..

 From Linda Lee Greene, Author/Artist

The gods and goddesses of literature, who decide such things, maintain that my book, GARDEN OF THE SPIRITS OF THE POTS, A Spiritual Odyssey, is not a novel.

“What do you mean it isn’t a novel?!” I shoot back. “It’s chock full of narrative that transports readers to a fictional world. It sends my protagonist on a spiritual journey in which he encounters a series of obstacles he overcomes. Surely my book is a novel!” I insist.

“Your GARDEN OF THE SPIRITS OF THE POTS is too short to be a novel!” the sentry goddess steps forward and informs me, a self-righteous lift to her upper lip that galls me to no end. “It has to comprise 40,000+ words to be a novel. Your book, which comes in at just under 39,000 words, qualifies as a novella. Not to be finicky about it, but strictly speaking any piece of fiction that falls between 17,000 and 40,000 words is a novella. If you want it to be a novel, you must go back in and add 1,000 words or more to it.”

It irks me to give in to this arrogant custodian of all things literary, but I swallow my annoyance and revisit my manuscript to find more words to insert in it. But no words come! It satisfies me just as it is. I suppose I must be content that my GARDEN OF THE SPIRITS OF THE POTS is a novella.

This exchange with the arrogant sovereign of the literary world sets me on a quest to reacquaint myself with the parameters of other types of works of fiction. In my research on the subject I stumble upon an obscure thing called a “novelette,” described as a work of fiction of 7,500 to 17,000 words in length. You will never guess what I found to be famous works of this type: Edgar Allan Poe’s THE TELL-TALE HEART and his THE FALL OF THE HOUSE OF USHER, as well as Franz Kafka’s THE METAMORPHOSIS. Who knew?!

Okay, so now I’m dying to discover the next category in this demanding hierarchy of literary regulations, and you guessed it—number four on the list is short story, and it has to be between 3,500 and 7,500 words to gain and maintain its much-loved position in the pecking order of literature.

Further down the list, flash fiction, otherwise known as short-short story, or micro-fiction, or postcard fiction, requires only 53 – 1,000 words. A number of my blog posts qualify for this classification.

What form a piece of fiction between 1,000 to 3,500 words takes, I have yet to discover. Most of my stories of historical fiction that I have posted on my blog, and will continue to do so, fall into this unspecified classification of fiction. The goddess of literature refuses to tell me its name. If anyone out there can clear-up this mystery for me, I implore you to do so. Otherwise, it will hang on as another bit of trivia among an over-abundance of them that drills into my brain night and day.©

GARDEN OF THE SPIRITS OF THE POTS

A Spiritual Odyssey

Readers were introduced to American Nicholas Plato in multi-award-winning author Linda Lee Greene’s A CHANCE AT THE MOON, which was published in 2019 and is available for purchase at https://tinyurl.com/3dc75u6p. Greene takes readers on another adventure of Nicholas’ whirlwind life in her GARDEN OF THE SPIRITS OF THE POTS, A Spiritual Odyssey. In this sequel, Nicholas shows up in Sydney, Australia. The principle plotline unfolds as on one Saturday of sightseeing he gets lost in Australia’s forbidding yet alluring outback, and there he happens upon a pintsized hut on a lonely plot littered with hundreds of clay pots of every size and description. Driven by a deathly thirst, he stops. A strange little brown man materializes out of nowhere and introduces himself merely as ‘Potter’ and welcomes Nicholas to his ‘Garden of the Spirits of the Pots.’ Although Nicholas has never laid eyes on Potter, the man seems to have expected Nicholas at his bizarre habitation and displays knowledge about him that nobody has any right to possess. Just who is this mysterious Aboriginal potter?

Although they are as mismatched as two persons can be, a strangely inevitable friendship takes hold between them. It is a relationship that can only be directed by an unseen hand bent on setting Nicholas on a mystifying voyage of self-discovery and Potter on revelations of universal certainties.

A blend of visionary and inspirational fiction with a touch of romance, this is a tale of Nicholas’ journey into parts unknown, both within his adopted home and himself, a quest that in the end leads him to his true purpose for living.

AUTHOR HL CARPENTER VISITS ON THIS DAY OF WHAT'S COOKING?

JOIN ME IN WELCOMING AUTHOR HL CARPENTER ON THIS DAY OF WHAT’S COOKING?

Just in time for Halloween and Thanksgiving, author HL Carpenter brings us a clever and tasty nibbler for our guests.

NO TRICK TO THIS DELICIOUS TREAT

From HL Carpenter

October is national pumpkin month, but we think such a beautiful fruit should get more than just one month of notoriety. So smile, say cheese, and make your own yummy appetizer for any holiday get-together.

CHEESE BALL PUMPKIN

2- 8 ounce packages cream cheese

4- ounces crumbled feta or bleu cheese

4- ounces shredded sharp cheddar or pepper jack cheese

2- tsp Worcestershire sauce

1-    tsp prepared mustard

½ tsp onion powder

Paprika

The stem of a green bell pepper

Place all the cheeses in a large bowl, cover, set aside, and allow to soften to room temperature.

When cheeses are softened, add Worcestershire sauce and mustard. Blend with electric hand mixer or in food processor, using low speed. Scrape bowl and beat blended mixture on medium speed for 1 or 2 minutes more until well mixed. Do not over-beat.

Turn the mixture onto a piece of plastic wrap. Pull the wrap up on all sides and fastened at the top with a twist tie, forming a pouch for the mixture. Shape the mixture into a ball. Using your fingertip, score “ribs” onto the cheese mixture to resemble the ribs of a pumpkin.

With the plastic wrap in place, set the cheese ball in a bowl and refrigerate for at least 4 hours or overnight.

Before serving, sprinkle with paprika and add a bell pepper stem to its top. Return to refrigerator. Prior to serving, remove the cheese ball pumpkin from the plastic wrap pouch and place on plate surrounding it with an assortment of crackers or veggie pieces.

Once upon a time, there was a mother/daughter duo named Helen and Lorrie that wrote as HL Carpenter. They worked from their studio in Carpenter Country, a magical place that like their stories was unreal but not untrue. One day, Lorrie left the studio to explore the land of “What-if.” And then the magical place lost much of its magic. But thanks to family, plus an amazing group of wordsmiths known as Authors Moving Forward (AMF), the magic is slowly returning.

Helen Carpenter loves liking and sharing the blog posts of other authors. She lives in Florida with her husband of many years and appreciates every day, especially those without hurricanes.

AUTHOR CAROL BROWNE'S NEW RELEASE: AN ELF'S LAMENT UPON LEAVING

~WEDNESDAY WRITER’S FORUM~

Welcomes Author Carol Browne and Her ‘An Elf’s Lament Upon Leaving’

Today’s guest on WEDNESDAY WRITER’S FORUM! is British author Carol Browne.  She gives us a sneak peak of her new release, ‘An Elf’s Lament Upon Leaving’, which is a collection of short stories and poems. Welcome, Carol!

No one says it better than an Amazon reviewer who describes the book as “atmospheric”:

“The poetry is steeped in a love of nature, magic and mythology. The short stories hold interesting twists. No spoilers! The Boomerang Effect (dabbling with a love spell, Martin Nevis finds himself having second thoughts) A Force to Be Reckoned With (an outcast with thoughts of being ‘destined for something great’ wants to join the police force) and Transformation (once bullied, Patricia attends a school reunion and emerges victorious) were my favorites.

Give this anthology collection of short stories a read, you won’t be disappointed.”

~POEM~

An elf laments a passing era,
But truth and beauty will survive,
For they live on in stories and verses,
And in our imaginations thrive.

Nature, nostalgia, mystery and magic,
In twisty tales and poems that rhyme,
Are here, with myth and fantasy blended,
To capture another place and time.

Here’s an excerpt from the short story, The Boomerang Effect.

Martin found just the spell he needed. It was in a very old book, wedged among countless other volumes at the rear of the occult bookshop.
He pulled the book from its hiding-place. Eight Ways to Magic, proclaimed the title. The book cracked in protest, as Martin pried it open. His eyes flicked hungrily down the list of contents and widened as they reached Chapter Six – “Love Spells”.
Martin glanced warily around the shop, as though fearful of discovery, but, apart from an elderly lady squinting at a book on flower magic, he was quite alone. And the proprietor, a raw-boned man whose fuzz of grey hair ringed the summit of his skull like a helm-cloud, was engrossed in a book catalogue at the counter, his long nose like a spike of bone wearing spectacles.
Martin’s fingers fumbled their way through age-thickened pages until they reached Chapter Six. And there it was, spell number eight: How to attract the lover of your choice.
He closed the book, hugged it to his chest and made for the counter, his heart quickening with excitement.
Now, Debbie Starsmore, he thought, you shall be mine.
Leaving the shop moments later, his purchase thrust into his holdall like a guilty secret, he made for home.
Home was a grubby ground-floor flat in the cheaper part of town. Martin had lived there alone for 25 years since leaving school in the summer of ‘63 with an ‘O’ Level in Art and the complete indifference of his teachers. His parents hadn’t minded his leaving home. His mother, in fact, had been quite cheerful at the prospect of doing less laundry, while his father had wondered how many lodgers they could legally cram into Martin’s old room.
So Martin set off on his lonely journey through life.
By day, he vacantly occupied the position of sales assistant at B. Fleet Footwear, and for 25 years grew a paunch, while his hair receded vaguely towards the crown of his head. These signs of maturity never seemed to earn him the right to promotion, but Martin was content with his lot.
Little did B. Fleet know how much it suited the ageing assistant to be lowly and anonymous because, by night, Martin was a wizard.

Once upon a time a little girl wrote a poem about a flower. Impressed, her teacher pinned it to the wall and, in doing so, showed the child which path to follow.Over the years poems and stories flowed from her pen like magic from a wizard’s wand. She is much older now, a little wiser too, and she lives in rural Cambridgeshire, where there are many trees to hug.
But inside her still is that little girl who loved Nature and discovered the magic of words.
She hopes to live happily ever after.

HOW DID IT ALL BEGIN?

Award-winning author Sloane Taylor is an avid cook and posts new recipes on her http://sloanetaylor.blogspot.com/ blog every Wednesday. The recipes are user friendly, meaning easy. Her cookbooks: Date Night Dinners; Date Night Dinners Italian Style; Summer Sizzle; and Recipes to Create Holidays Extraordinaire are released by Toque & Dagger Publishing and are available at all book vendors. Taylor stopped by my blog today to give us a bit of history on the origin of Halloween and to share one of her delightful menus ranging from appetizers to a main course for the popular holiday.

 HOW DID IT ALL BEGIN?

 From Sloane Taylor, Author

Halloween October 31 -  Centuries ago ancient Celtics believed that at summer’s end the barrier between our world and the world of spirits thinned, allowing evil to cross over to us. Time passed and people dressed as saints and went door to door which is the origin for tonight’s ghosts and goblins to magically appear at your front door to trick you if you don’t treat them.

Invite friends over and celebrate Halloween with this menu that will tame your creatures who go bump in the night.

 MENU

Appetizers

Barbequed Meatballs

Garlic Dip & Pretzels

Sangria

Main Course

Braised Short Ribs

Mashed Potatoes

Veggie Sauté

Dry Red Wine – Pinot Noir

Appetizers

 Barbequed Meatballs

This is an easy appetizer recipe you adjust to suit you. Add more jelly if you prefer a sweeter taste or cut jelly amount and increase barbeque sauce if you want a tangy taste. Plan on 4 – 5 meatballs per person.

1 12 oz. (340g) jar grape jelly

1 – 2 bottles barbeque sauce

50 precooked frozen Italian style meatballs

Toothpicks for serving

Scoop jelly into a medium-sized saucepan set over medium heat. Add 1 bottle barbeque sauce. Stir until jelly melts.

Add meatballs. Stir in more barbeque sauce if needed. You want the meatballs covered but not swimming. Simmer 5 – 10 minutes, stir occasionally.

Serve warm.

Garlic Dip & Pretzel Twists

8 oz. (226g) cream cheese, softened

1 tbsp. (15ml) garlic powder, not salt

Pinch salt

2 tbsp. (30ml) milk, possibly more

Lay cream cheese in a medium-sized mixing bowl. I know this seems too large, but you need the room. Use a wooden spoon to mash the cheese against the sides of the bowl.

Sprinkle on garlic. Stir well. Add salt and stir well. Taste for flavor. Add more garlic if necessary. Don’t add more salt. You’ll get plenty of that flavor from the pretzels.

Drizzle in milk. Stir well. Carefully stir in milk until you reach a consistency soft enough to dip the pretzel without breaking it.

Scoop into a serving bowl, cover with cling wrap, and refrigerate. Remove from fridge a half hour or so before serving. This dip lasts 1 week in the fridge.

Sangria

½ lemon, peel intact and sliced thin

½ orange, peel intact and sliced thin

½ lg. apple, cored and sliced thin

¼ cup (30g) superfine sugar

1 bottle dry red wine, Portuguese or Spanish preferred

¼ cup (60ml) brandy or cognac

1-liter club soda, chilled

Ice

Combine lemon, orange, apple, and sugar in a large pitcher. Stir in wine and brandy. Taste for sweetness. If the punch is still not sweet enough, carefully add another ¼ cup (30g) of sugar.

Refrigerate for several hours to intensify the flavors.

Just before serving gently stir in club soda. Fill wine glasses with ice and pour in Sangria.

 Main Course

Braised Short Ribs

2 – 3 lbs. (1 – 1.5kg) beef short ribs, cut into 2 inch (5cm) or so pieces

freshly ground pepper to taste

½ cup (60g) flour

½ tsp. (2.5ml) thyme

2 tbsp. (30ml) lard or solid shortening

2 medium onions, chopped

½ cup (60g) carrot, chopped

1 tbsp. (15ml) garlic, pressed or chopped fine

1 cup (250ml) beef stock

2 small bay leaves

1 tbsp. (30ml) Worcestershire Sauce

Preheat oven to 325° F (160°C).

Pat ribs dry. Grind pepper over meat. Pour flour and thyme into a paper bag. Add 2 – 4 ribs at a time. Shake bag gently to coat meat. Remove ribs and set on a large plate. Continue until all ribs are coated.

Melt lard or shortening in a Dutch oven over medium-high heat until it shimmers. Carefully add ribs and brown them on all sides. Don’t crowd the pan. Best to brown meat in batches so the cooking temperature remains constant. Return ribs to plate. Lower heat to medium.

Add onions and carrots to the same pot. Sauté until onions are soft and transparent. Add garlic. Cook 45 – 60 seconds.

Stir in stock. Bring to a boil over high heat. Scrape in any brown bits clinging to the bottom and sides of the pan.

Reduce heat to medium. Stir in bay leaves and Worcestershire sauce.

Nestle ribs in pan and bring to a boil. Cover and then place in oven. Braise ribs for 1½ hours or until meat shows no resistance when pierced with the tip of a sharp knife.

Arrange ribs on a clean platter and tent with foil to keep them warm.

Strain braising liquid through a fine sieve into a saucepan. Press down hard on vegetables to extract juices. Discard vegetables. Skim off surface fat. Bring to a hard boil. Cook 2 – 3 minutes to intensify flavor.

Pour sauce into a gravy boat and serve alongside ribs.

Mashed Potatoes

Chicken stock, not broth

1 small russet potato per person, peeled and quartered

3 tbsp. (43g) butter

Sour cream, a very large dollop

¼ cup (60ml) milk, at room temperature

Freshly ground pepper to taste

Parsley, snipped or chopped for garnish

Preheat oven to 220° F (100°C).

Pour one-inch (2.5cm) chicken stock into saucepan. Place potatoes in saucepan. Add tap water to cover by at least one inch (2.5cm). Cover the pan and bring to a boil over medium heat. Lower temperature to a strong simmer. Cook approximately 20 - 25 minutes. Potatoes are done when a fork inserts easily into a section.

Drain potatoes. Stir in butter, sour cream, and pepper. Mash well. Drizzle in milk. Mash and continue to add milk until you achieve the consistency you prefer.

Keep the saucepan warm in the oven while you finish preparing dinner.

Veggie Sauté

Leftovers from this easy recipe make a tasty lunch when reheated in a little butter and served with crusty bread and a glass of cold white wine.

8 oz. (250g) baby bella mushrooms

2 tbsp. (30ml) olive oil

1 zucchini, sliced thin

1 red pepper, seeded and ribs removed

1 yellow pepper, seeded and ribs removed

1 small onion, sliced thin

½ tsp. (2.5ml) garlic powder, not salt

Freshly ground black pepper to taste

Clean mushrooms with a paper towel to remove bedding soil. Slice them in half lengthwise if medium size or into thirds if large.

Dribble oil into a medium-sized frying pan set over medium heat. Do not let it smoke.

Add all the vegetables except mushrooms. Turn up heat to medium-high. Sauté about 4 minutes, stirring frequently.

Lower temperature to medium. Stir in mushrooms, garlic powder, and pepper.

Continue to cook 3 minutes or until peppers are at the crispness you prefer.

May you enjoy all the days of your life filled with good friends, laughter, and seated around a well-laden table!

NEW RELEASE - GARDEN OF THE SPIRITS OF THE POTS

 From Linda Lee Greene, Author/Artist

I am delighted to announce the release of my new book, a novella titled GARDEN OF THE SPIRITS OF THE POTS,  A Spiritual Odyssey. It is a story in which ex-pat American bachelor Nicholas Plato, following the violent death of Tobias, his twin brother, roommate, and business partner, is on his own for the first time in his life. But that is the least of the challenges Nicholas encounters in his adopted home of Sydney, Australia and the area’s forbidding but alluring outback. One fateful day, Nicholas gets lost in the outback and happens on a pintsized hut on a lonely plot littered with hundreds of clay pots of every size and description. Driven by a deathly thirst, he stops. A strange little brown man materializes out of nowhere and introduces himself merely as ‘Potter,’ and welcomes Nicholas to his ‘Garden of the Spirits of the Pots.’ Although Nicholas has never laid eyes on Potter, the man seems to have expected Nicholas at his bizarre habitation and displays knowledge about him that nobody has any right to possess.

A blend of inspirational fiction, romance, and allegory, this is a tale of Nicholas’ journey into parts unknown, both within his adopted home and himself, a spiritual odyssey that in the end leads him to his true purpose for living.©

“STAND BY YOUR MAN,” SOMETIMES AT YOUR PERIL

It is my great pleasure to feature a new author on my blog today. I hope you enjoy reading about her.

In her debut novella, author Marla Morris packs in a well-written, powerful, and emotion-charged story of misguided love, of love-gone-wrong, and of fatal love. Set in a time when “Stand by your man,” was still the pervasive ethos no matter the cost or danger to a woman, Morris brings home to the reader a gut-wrenching portrait of the female protagonist of her story whose adherence to the code was her ruination. This is a cathartic read for women who have been caught in similar circumstances, as well as an informative one for women on the outside looking inward, or for women on the inside looking for a way out. I recommend this book as a 5-star read. It is available for purchase at Amazon.com. –Linda Lee Greene, Author/Artist

Mother of two grown children and grandmother of three grandchildren, author Marla Morris is a lifelong Central Ohio resident. She was educated at Columbus’ Capital University School of Law. She enjoys crime and police detective television shows, and her bucket list includes traveling to all fifty states of the United States of America and cruising on the Mediterranean.

A HAUNTING BIRTHDAY PARTY BY TINA RUIZ

 Featuring Author Tina Ruiz

Since I have your attention, I’d like to announce my latest Halloween children’s book – A Haunting Birthday Party available on Amazon. This is the second children’s book I’ve written with a Halloween theme. A Halloween Party was book one.

As I promised my grandchildren, and others who truly enjoyed the first Halloween Children’s Book, this one also contains silly character names. Example: Harry Pitts (harry arm pitts) is the narrator in this book, and the birthday party is for Peppa Roni and her twin brother, Reece A. Roni. It takes place at the Ray Zen (raisin) Restaurant, where people like Judge Mental and his wife, Judy, are enjoying a lovely meal. Kitti Letter (kitty litter) is the waitress for that side of the room, and her job is to give all the kids a spooktacular evening. Walter Melon (water melon) is the magician, Eve Ning (evening) is the cashier, Miss Turi (mystery) is another waitress, and Mr. I. Ball (eyeball) is the manager of the restaurant.

As you can see, this is a fun treat for young and old alike. I’m excited for the world to see my second Halloween children’s book.

The story is about Peppa Roni and her twin brother, Reece A. Roni and Reece are having their 9th birthday party in the neighborhood restaurant.

The storyline is quite charming, and because you will try to figure out the double meaning of the fun names while you read, this is bound to become your child’s favorite book.

This delightful paperback book is another wonderful collaboration from writer Tina Nykulak Ruiz and illustrator Ishika Sharma. This creative duo knows how to put life and fun into children’s books to encourage young people to read. As with all of Tina’s children’s stories, there’s a moral at the end.

Tina Ruiz was born in Germany, but her family moved to Canada when she was in grammar school. She began writing children’s stories when her own were little. Through the years Ruiz wrote twenty-seven books. Most of those stories went into readers for the Canada Board of Education. Two did not. Mayor Shadoe Markley is a story about a ten-year-old girl who becomes Mayor for a Day through a contest at school.

Little did Ruiz know that story would “change the world.” The book came out at early January 1988. By the end of that same month, everyone was calling the mayor’s office at City Hall, trying to get the forms to fill out so their children could participate in the contest. Thirty years later that same contest is still runs at full speed. And not only in Calgary, but all across Canada. The Mayor’s Youth Council is now in charge of the celebrated contest and invites Ruiz to attend and meet the lucky winner. It’s usually followed by a hand-written thank you card from the mayor himself. Recently Ruiz was invited to be part of the Grand Opening of Calgary’s New Library where the mayor shook her hand and introduced her to the attendees.

Tina has worked in television and radio as well as being a professional clown at the Children’s Hospital. She lives in Calgary with her husband who encourages her to write her passion be it high-quality children’s books or intriguing romance.
